You walk up to a group of young high school kids skateboarding in the park on a Saturday afternoon, tell them you’re doing a photo scavenger hunt and need some help getting a picture of somebody jumping. They look at you skeptically, disinterested.
“Maybe one of you could do an ollie off that ledge…whoever can do it the highest…”
Before you know it, a half hour goes by. You’ve checked about ten things off your scavenger hunt list. You’ve learned who the best skateboarder is, who can do backflips and handstands, who the best dancer is, who the natural leaders are. You’ve learned that not everyone knows how a human pyramid works, that kids are kids. And that being willing to stop and meet the people around you is always worth it.
